Detecting Early Season Pests in Wheat

Detecting Early Season Pests in Wheat

According to K-State field crop entomologist Jeff Whitworth, a wave of warm weather in the middle of February may draw attention to winter grain mites – a concern to many farmers – but they aren’t doing any damage right now. Winter grain mites are in the egg stage right now. There are a few active nymphs and adults though. You may go out on a warmer night with a flashlight and see some feeding on leaves, but they will be down in the soil not really doing damage on colder nights.

Rockin’ Robin!

What a week! I may not know what day it is; but, I know my cup runneth over. Last week was spent covering area wrestlers at the State Tournaments. We added several schools to our list to follow and that sure kept us busy. But, it was worth it as we were able to support fellow Tri-Valley League teams/fellow southeast Kansas teams on their quest for state honors. Special shout out to Eureka’s Lyndsey Escareno, and West Elk’s Evan Coble and Creyo Koop, who all placed at the tournaments and represented Eureka and West Elk well.
