Winning Streak Ended On Senior Night
Last Friday, on a cold and cloudy evening, the Eureka Tornadoes football team played their final district game of the season against the visiting Cherryvale Chargers. This night was Eureka’s Pink Out night, as fans and players alike donned pink clothing due to Breast Cancer Awareness. The contest also marked Eureka’s senior night.
Cherryvale was dominant inside of the first quarter. On the second play of the game, the Chargers connected on a 75-yard pass for a touchdown, but failed on the ensuing PAT. Cherryvale would proceed to gain two more touchdowns in the first quarter of action, both off of relatively short runs. This drive carried into the second quarter, as Cherryvale, after intercepting a pass from senior Cade Larcom, gained 6 points off of a 24-yard pass. However, Eureka was able to complete a touchdown play before the closing of the first half, as Larcom connected a 70-yard pass to senior Zach Hare. The PAT by junior kicker Yaromin Faudoa concluded the second quarter, with the Chargers leading by a score of 7-28.
Starting in the third quarter, the Tornadoes began an attempt to rally back against Cherryvale. Following runs by Hare and junior Brennan Lowe, Larcom connected on an 8-yard pass to Hare for a touchdown. Lowe then intercepted a Charger pass, giving Eureka possession once again. After completing a first down, junior Brent Escareno ran for 68-yards and a touchdown. Near the end of the third quarter, Eureka’s defense put a stop to Cherryvale’s drive, forcing a punt. Larcom then threw another touchdown pass, this time from 75-yards out, for another touchdown. However, going into the fourth quarter, the Chargers still held a 3-point lead against the Tornadoes.
