Tornado Softball Split With Cherryvale Chargers

The Lady Tornadoes softball team traveled to Cherryvale last Thursday, where they won the first game and lost the second.

Eureka and Cherryvale played neck-and-neck in game one, after Eureka jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first. Gracie Walden led off for the Lady Tornadoes and stole two bases after being hit by pitch. An error by Cherryvale brought her home for the first run of the game. Madeline Nichols singled to bring in Mia Miller and Nichols later scored on a fielder’s choice. Cherryvale quickly answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. After singles by Walden and Miller in the second inning, Eureka added 3 runs again with the help of two fielder’s choices, a walk and a passed ball. Cherryvale added one more in the 2nd, to narrow Eureka’s lead to 6-4. The score evened at 7 in the third inning and Cherryvale took their first lead of the game in the fifth with a score of 8-10. Eureka responded with a 7-run sixth inning with the help of singles by Emilee Escareno, Alyssa Gore and Ryleigh Smalley. Escareno also added a double in the inning. Eureka allowed 4 runs by Cherryvale in the bottom of the inning, but both teams were scoreless in the seventh. Eureka won the game 15-13.

Escareno led the Tornadoes in hits with 3. Walden and Smalley added 2, and Miller, Nichols, Bryka Nixon and Gore each had 1.
