JH Tornadoes Defeat Bluestem In Season Opener
The Eureka Junior High Tornadoes football opened their season last Thursday night with a 34-20 home victory over the Bluestem Lions. The game featured multiple new starters for the Tornadoes after most of the league champions from last year moved up to the high school ranks. This inexperience showed, as the Tornadoes played a ragged first half. They adjusted at half time and put the game out of reach in the 3 rd quarter.
Both teams opened the game with stalled drives. Bluestem’s second drive also stalled as the scoreless first quarter came to an end. Eureka also turned the ball over on downs, but caused a fumble on Bluestem’s ensuing possession, creating a short field, and finally scored on an 18- yard run by eighth grader Dylan Hamilton. After a failed conversion, Bluestem took the ball and promptly marched down the field, scoring on a 1-yard run. They also failed on the conversion attempt, leaving the score tied 6-6, which was the score at halftime.
