Eureka Lady Tornadoes 2019-20 Season Recap

This was such an incredible year for the Lady Tornado Basketball program. Had someone told me last summer we would beat three highly ranked teams, including a state final four team in 4A Clay Center, be undefeated TVL League Champions, Sub-state Runners Up in arguably the toughest sub-state in 3A, and have a record of 20-3, I would have told them they were crazy! After all, we lost three starters to graduation, had players move, and players just flat out quit. But, thank goodness, these 14 girls had other plans! They were incredibly motivated to become the best team in school history that played the best together!

They didn’t play to break records or make All-State teams. They didn’t play to get a scholarship, make the newspaper, or get exposure on social media. It was so much bigger than that. It was bigger than even their friends and sometimes even their own families could understand.

In sports, each team consists of individuals with different roles and interests, their individual goals must support the team goal and not supersede it. Teams will struggle when an individual within the team places their needs above the rest. This was far from the case with the 2020 Lady Tornadoes. They were resilient in preserving team chemistry and commitment to their shared goals! They were an example of a team in which the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.
