On Discovering Leadership

I walked in and nestled down in my chair near my wife for a touch of conversation and a general breather. Instead, I heard the Governor of New York deliver a much-needed pep talk to his constituents. He began by quoting his daughter as saying, “I can’t do this anymore.” He explained to her why she could.

Do you know what I thought? Fireside Chat. Even today, if I listen to a Fireside Chat, I feel better. FDR was a leader.

Lately, discussions of leadership seem to be inching into our national narrative. I thought I knew what leadership was until I tried to define it. Webster’s contains a most unsatisfying definition. It states leadership is the ability to lead. Okay, how do you argue with that?

Let’s check the definition of leader. A leader is a person who leads. Go figure!
