Tonya TeTer Brown
Tonya Teter Brown, 72, of Emporia, KS passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. She fought a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Eureka, Kansas on June 21, 1946, Tonya was the daughter of Betty Jo (Stokes) and Robert W. Teter. She was raised in Eureka, Kansas and graduated from Eureka High School in 1964. She went on to attend St Mary’s of the Plains College in Dodge City and later Emporia State University Teachers College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. She taught speech / oral expression at Lowther Middle school but put her career on hold to raise her family where she excelled as a homemaker. She later returned to teaching as a substitute teacher and taught at Emporia High School for several years, her passion teaching teenagers with additional needs.
Tonya married her high school sweetheart, Terry Brown, on February 10, 1968. They raised two children together, Craig and Christy. Being a wife and mother were paramount and she took much pride in being a homemaker. She was never idle volunteering as a Cub Scouts Leader, as a T-Ball Coach, for Mary Herbert Elementary PTA and Sacred Heart Catholic Church Alter Society. She had a passion for sewing crafts and quilting often participating in local fall festivals, sidewalk festivals and spring flings. She loved animals especially cats. Most of all, her pride and joy were her three grandchildren in Australia who she traveled to see twice a year just to be there for their birthdays. When she was back at home she showered them with greeting cards filled with stickers for which she was well known.
Tonya was an avid sports fan and loved watching baseball, college basketball and football. At one time she even aspired to be a sports announcer. Her favorite time of year was “March Madness” and she loved everything about following teams, players and coaches. A longstanding favorite college basketball coach, Jim Valvano, became a stalwart during the months she battled cancer. His Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research’s motto is “DON’T GIVE UP… DON’T EVER GIVE UP”, this quickly became her motto too.
Tonya is survived by her husband of 51 years, Terry Brown; a daughter Christy Conners and husband Scott of Australia; three grandchildren Grace, William and George Conners also of Australia; Her brother Steve Teter and wife Espie of Irvine, CA; Eight nieces and nephews, special cousins and friends who are family.
Tonya was preceded in death by her son Craig Brown, a brother John Teter and her parents.
A special thank you to staff at the University of Kansas Hospital, Newman Regional Health, Central Care Cancer Center and Hand in Hand Hospice.
