Robert “Bob” Eugene Fife
Robert “Bob” Eugene Fife, 96, died on September 27, 2019, at Sunset Manor, in Waverly.
He was born April 1, 1923 in Colby, the son of Franklin H. Fife and Edith (Riley) Fife. He was a graduate of Shawnee Mission High School, in Shawnee Mission.
He entered his military service in the Air Force in February of 1943 and left for overseas duty in May of 1944. He was a prisoner of war for 14 months. He was liberated by British forces in April of 1945 and honorably discharged in November of 1945. He joined the Navy in December of 1946 and served one year. He was called to active duty in the Air Force during the Korean War and served for another year.
On May 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Hermalee Hyder. They resided most of their married life in Wichita and later spent their retirement years in Toronto. The couple owned and operated several businesses in both cities, including the four Hy’s Carryouts, two in Wichita one in Madison and one in Toronto.
He was a member of New York Valley Church in Yates Center and a member of the American Legion Post #325 in Toronto.
He is survived by one daughter, Brenda Tracy of Virgil; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters; Illah Howell and Ruth Suddreth-Davis; and one brother, Ted Fife.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two brothers Frank and Jerry Fife; two sisters Rosemary Montgomery and Myrna Saunders; and one son Herbert.
Memorial services were held Friday, October 4, at the New York Valley Church of God in Yates Center. Inurnment followed in Toronto Cemetery.
