Tax Exemption Questioned By City Council

With few items on the agenda last Monday, Eureka City Councilmembers spent most of their regular meeting discussing various topics during the city administrator’s report. The Eureka Downs racetrack facility was among the topics brought up when councilman Kevin Lawrence asked about the most recent attempt by state legislators to lower the taxes on racetrack gaming in Kansas. It was noted that the bill failed, but supporters will likely take up the issue again in the future. Lawrence stated that he would like to see the racetrack open back up for business, but added, “There are 60 acres there in the city limits that is being used commercially, but not being taxed.” He continued, “We get no revenue from it because of its former use.”
