After months of discussion regarding the city of Eureka’s contract with the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, and a special meeting last month to discuss contract negotiations, the Eureka City Council voted to approve the 2018 contract at their meeting last Monday. Sheriff Heath Samuels and Undersheriff Randy Cox attended the council meeting to present the updated contract, which included an updated statement regarding liability insurance and a new clause that allows the sheriff or his designee to pull the deputy from Eureka in extreme circumstances.
Several questions regarding the contract were posed to Samuels and Cox. Councilwoman Anne Lewis asked how new officers were trained on the city’s codes. “It’s pretty standard,” said Samuels. He noted that a lot of the codes, such as the standard traffic ordinances, are also state laws and some are covered at the law enforcement academy all officers attend. When officers have questions about a code, they are able to reference the codebook.
