Approximately 600 Acres Burnt Over The Weekend During Accidental Grass Fires

Most divisions of the Greenwood County Fire Department, along with the Eureka City Fire Department, were busy over the weekend with grass fires in dry and windy conditions.

On Saturday, November 14, shortly after 5:30 p.m., county firefighters from Piedmont and Severy responded to the report of a grass fire at 60th and M Road. Upon arrival, more divisions were requested due to the size of the fire, weather conditions and brushy terrain. Several homes were also endangered by the fire. According to Greenwood County Fire Chief Doug Williams, the fire was contained within two hours. The following county fire divisions responded to the fire: Piedmont, Severy, Reece, Central, Fall River and Eureka Lake. The Eureka City Fire Department also responded. The fire burned approximately 200 acres and the cause was considered to be accidental.
