Royalty To Be Crowned After Friday Night Football Game
The West Elk Patriots will kick off the 2023 Fall Homecoming celebration with a bonfire in the south parking lot on Thursday, September 28, at 8 p.m. Community members are welcome to come and show their school spirit. On Friday, September 29, at 3 p.m., the homecoming parade will take place on Wabash in front of Family Market. The West Elk Booster Club will begin serving its annual Tailgate Supper at 5:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., the West Elk Patriot football team will host the Mustangs of Flinthills. Finally, the homecoming ceremony and coronation will take place at the conclusion of the football game.

Madison And Hamilton Homecoming Royalty Crowned Friday Night
Hamilton senior Teagn Brinkmeyer and junior Ashlynn Nowell and Madison seniors Gannon Pyle and Makenna Engle were crowned as Hamilton and Madison Homecoming Royalty last Friday night, during a special halftime presentation.

Biscuit And Gravy Breakfast This Saturday
The Verdigris Valley Foundation will be serving a biscuit and gravy breakfast on Saturday, September 23, at the Madison Sauder Center from 8 to 10 a.m. Proceeds from this event support the operation of the center and projects for the community.

Marshall PTA
The first meeting of the Marshall Elementary PTA was called to order on Tuesday, September 5, at 5:30 p.m. at Marshall Elementary by President Beth Whitehead. In attendance were six teachers including Principal Stacy Coulter and six parents, with two of those being current officers.

High Risk Of West Nile Virus Activity in Five Kansas Regions
TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a high-risk warning for West Nile virus infections (WNV) for all regions of the state other than the southeast region, which is at a moderate risk level.

Board Of Trustees Approved Resolution
During a special meeting on Monday, September 11, the Greenwood County Hospital (GWCH) Board of Trustees unanimously approved the following: a Resolution approving the Bond Financing, Trane U.S., Inc. Agreement and the Pledge of Revenues Agreement.

Attended SEKLS Event
Greenwood County Appointee Sheila Koup, and Sue York of Fall River Public Library were among the 90 members of the Southeast Kansas Library System (SEKLS) who attended the Fall In-Service and Revenue Neutral Rate Hearing held August 25 at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center, in Iola. Wulf Roby, Communications Coordinator for the State Library of Kansas, presented as keynote speaker. They shared information about how libraries statewide can best share their stories and market their services and programs. Attendees could attend two of these four afternoon workshops: Easy Marketing or Cut the Craptivities and AI for Public Libraries or a Library Trustee Orientation panel.

Greenwood County Commissioners Discussed Regular Business
Interim Road and Bridge Supervisor John Schouten provided the Road and Bridge report Monday, September 18. Schouten shared that the bridge at 250th and DD Road was needing assessed. He noted that this could potentially be moved to the top of the priority list due to the condition. Schouten shared that he had found a 2017 International truck, located in Topeka and listed on Purple Wave Auction, that he is looking into. He noted that no employee had been to look at this as of Monday morning. Schouten shared that progress continues at the Tadpole Creek crossing. Bids from Everitt Concrete for the Snell Bridge and Short bridge (located near Hamilton) were provided to commissioners for review. Discussion of plans for the Short bridge included work to prevent washouts. Work has been completed to the 140th Street bridge project. The crossing is currently in the curing stage. Commissioners approved the bid of $26,000 from Drew Ramsey of Everitt Concrete for repair of the Short bridge. Commissioners will continue reviewing the proposal for the Snell bridge. Schouten shared that forestry head was received and has been utilized in operations.
