Public library directors from across southeast Kansas gathered at beautiful Lehigh-Portland State Park in Iola on Oct. 1 for the Southeast Kansas Library System’s (SEKLS) Directors’ Retreat. The day began with remarks from System Di-rector, Sharon Moreland, who set the intentions for the program. Northeast Kansas Library System Consultant, Dan Alexander, presented “The Art of Gathering at Work,” based on the work of Priya Parker. Participants also heard from their fellow directors: Moline Public Library Director, Diane Cucar, and Toronto Public Library Director, Jessie Hoag, presented “Small Library, Big Impact.” Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to connect with their peers through facilitated small group discussions. One director reported, “I loved the small group discussions— helped me to realize that my problems are not just my library.” SEKLS hosts in-person events throughout the year to facilitate the development of these important connections among libraries.
