Toronto News

Election day will soon be here and I bet I’m not the only one who is anxious for it to be over with. Political ads are on TV, radio, the internet and everywhere you look outside. It’s bad enough that there are so many ads, but the majority of the ads are slamming their opponents instead of telling what they stand for and what they want to ac- complish while in office.

I heard on the news that a record number of people have registered to vote in this midterm election. It is expected to be a record turnout nationwide.

What do you call a group of turkey vultures?

Hello to all in area nursing and assisted living facilities. Hello also to all in area hospitals and rehab centers.

We offer our sympathy to the family and friends of Harold Kibbe, and Amaryllis “Amy” Specht. We offer our sympathy to everyone else who lost loved ones this past week. May they all rest in peace.

Answer: Turkey vultures have several collective nouns that vary with their behavior. When soaring in the air, a group is called a kettle, reflecting the birds circling together in thermals while searching for food. When resting on the ground or perched in trees, they are referred to as a committee, evoking the image of a solemn gathering. A group feeding on a carcass is called a wake, highlighting their role as scavengers in nature. Additionally, guild is used for communal roosts, where dozens or hundreds of vultures gather overnight.

Speaking of turkey vultures, Thursday when I was headed north out of town, there were over two dozen on the gates, the bar above the gates, the metal bars running out from the gates, and on several fence posts at the entrance to that field owned by the Harris’s. So I guess I saw a committee. They weren’t moving much, I think the cooler weather that morning was having an effect on them.

Storm that blew thru Wednesday night was sure a noisy one. There was a lightning strike in the southeast corner of town with several residents getting things inside their houses damaged. We don’t need anymore storms like that.
