Opinion for The Eureka Herald Are you tired of the political ads this election season? I know that I am! Not only do they attack their opponents, but they (1) insult my intelligence, (2) evoke fears (that I didn’t know that I should have), and (3) attack my faith. If the ad is overtly outrageous, extreme or discriminates a group of people, it’s probably something said out-of-context and meant to mislead the viewer. Do not be fooled, because the networks running the ads do not “police” the falsehoods! It’s up to you to research which candidate is compatible with your belief system and will show-up to represent you.
Regarding the ads, always watch to the endto see who produced and paid for the ad.
If it’s a PAC (Political Action Committee), recognize that sponsoring a candidate is their way of expecting a future political favor—and it might not be in the best interest of Kansans. Many of the PACs have “sneaky” names that sound nice— so research their purpose. Further, determine who is funding the candidates’ campaigns. Be suspicious, if funding is by a few mega donors, large corporations and PACs—especially by out-of-state groups.
Instead of attack ads, wouldn’t it be wonderful if candidates would debate the issues impacting Kansans? I’m talking about real debates, where arguments have to be substantiated with facts. Many of the candidates have been reluctant to show-up for debates or even town hall meetings. What a disappointment! If a candidate comes to town, show them some respect by attending, listen to what they offer, and ask your questions. You can learn a lot about the issues.
The mid-term elections are almost here. So, no matter what, do your duty and VOTE for the local, State and National candidates that will make a difference and support Kansans!
