The regular meeting of the Madison Lions Club was held on Monday Sept. 28.
Lion Ty Gaines invited USD #386 Superintendent Dallas Woolf to speak during the program portion of the meeting. Woolf gave a detailed overview of the district with enrollment being up 22 students. He discussed some mechanical and facility needs that have had to be addressed in the last couple of years, such as bus purchase from lease, football scoreboard replacement, pump and fan repair and replacement to name a few.
Most of the facility needs are paid out of capital outlay, but there are some dire needs that are going to be well over what the district can cover. The primary need is the high school sewer that needs a major overhaul.
The survey that was taken by the district recently is in the review process for the school board to decide how to proceed. It was noted that the public response was favorable to the district’s primary needs.
Woolf also reported that he had secured a grant from the Patterson Family Fund for extensive welding equipment, stations installation, and tool purchases in the amount of $237,000.
Other needs discussed were grade school updates to lighting and kitchen, grade school storm shelter options, high school exterior doors, weight room, and storm shelter. The board will be reviewing the results to determine how to move forward.
Gunnar Gaines of the Madison Pacesetters presented the Lions with a plate of cookies and thank you card for supporting the Pacesetters Booster Club and the County Fair.
In other business, Lions Brad Williams and Ralph Rogers reported that they performed eye screenings at Hamilton School and screened 87 students with several referrals.
They also discussed city park safety needs and will discuss them further at the next meeting. The fish fry is the next big project on Nov. 1 for the Lions Club.
