Greenwood County History

- 1920s - (Part 5 of 14) -

“One of the first settlers to Eureka recalls helping with the first issue of The Herald. As a boy of eight he carried the chain and stake to help his father survey the townsite of Eureka. He picketed his horse in prairie grass knee-high where the Eureka Bank later stood. (Third and Main, southwest corner) He remembers the old stone schoolhouse was half completed as his family entered Eureka from the north in a wagon on the 29th day of March, 1868. The structure was about 25x40 feet and located on east First Street (and School Street) south of where the Christian Church was built ( no longer there) and it faced south towards River Street. There was only one room for all the grades and all recitations. He said: “What need of more rooms when we knew of nothing better.”
