Eureka Junior/Senior High School (EJSHS) students Molly Dehlinger and Emma Baumgartel gave the Greenwood County Commissioners a brief update on the recent Community Service Day during their short business meeting on Monday, Sept. 21.
The girls shared that 34 jobs were completed throughout Eureka during the annual event on Wednesday, Sept. 16, with 39 staff members and 214 students at EJSHS assisting with various projects. Crews completed work at several stops, including Eureka Aquatic Park, the Greenwood County Courthouse, Memorial Hall, Eureka Lake, the Greenwood County Community Center (also known as Eureka Downs), the Greenwood County Historical Society, and Greenwood County Hospital (GWCH), with students and staff providing landscape work, painting, and cleaning. The commissioners, along with GWCH CEO Sandra Dickerson, who attended via Zoom, expressed appreciation for the annual service day.
Commissioners reviewed bids for mowers, as presented by Noxious Weed Director Debi Selfridge, and approved the purchase of a 5110 10’6 single-wing mower for $31,989 from Salt Creek Farm & Ranch, LLC of Lyndon. Selfridge also presented a map of where crews had mowed this season so far, and shared that the county has completed spraying Sericea Lespedeza throughout the county.
The commission held a 15-minute executive session with County Counselor Paul Dean for personnel matters, regarding performance review. A second executive session was held for legal consultation for five minutes. No decisions were made following either session.
The commission approved a conditional use permit for Harmoni Towers, located at 2021 360th Street, Madison.
Road and Bridge Supervisor Allen Greenwood provided his weekly report.
The commission approved the Sept. 14 meeting minutes and special payables, totaling $3,241.79, as presented.
Following the meeting, the commissioners held a work session with department heads to review Section 10 of the personnel handbook. The next meeting is slated for Monday, Sept. 28, at 9 a.m. A Southeast Kansas area District meeting is slated for Oct. 1 in Oswego.
