GWSO To Receive $637,000 In Congressionally Directed Spending

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran announced a new federal investment for the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office (GWSO) on Friday, Sept. 4.

As chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, Sen. Moran secured federal resources for the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office to upgrade technology.

The congressionally directed spending, totaling $637,000, should arrive by the end of the year and will allow the Greenwood County Sheriff's Office to upgrade to the mandated 800 MHz radios.

Currently, the GWCO relies on three seperate 400MHz frequencies to cover the county, which does create deputy safety issues, as well as communication barriers.

In 2022, the Greenwood County Communication Steering committee was formed to develop framework on how to comply with the impending mandates. The purpose of the committee was to determine how to budget for a project that is the equivalent of 22% of the annual operating budget.

With the funds, GWSO will be able to purchase 20 mobile 800MHz radios and 32 portable 800MHz radios.
