The Elk County Commission meets weekly on Mondays at 1 p.m. The following report was generated from the approved minutes of the Aug. 10 meeting, which were approved at a recent meeting.
The Elk County Commissioners opened their regular meeting on Aug. 10 with the approval of the July 27 regular meeting minutes.
During Public Forum, discussion was held on how the county could increase revenue and possibly reduce taxes.
Commissioners approved a Real Property Disaster Relief Application for Randy Dougherty regarding the property at 123 7th Street in Elk Falls for fire damage.
Erica Cordell with Emergency Management informed commissioners of meetings she has attended. The monthly siren test was conducted and all sirens passed without issue. Cordell stated that the Elk County region will be hosting a regional tabletop exercise on Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. in Chanute. Discussion was also held regarding scheduling an A.L.I.C.E. training at the courthouse. Cordell will speak with department heads to get training scheduled.
During the Health report, it was noted that the Health Fair is scheduled for Oct. 3 at the Flint Hills Assembly of God Church from 8-11 a.m. Kristy Hanks with the Health Department noted she has been working on getting the policy and procedure books for immunizations and the County Community Resource Book updated.
During the Public Works report, it was noted that the bridge repair on Road 8 has begun. Discussion was also held regarding the removal of a gate and the installation of a cattle guard at the entrance of W & S property.
Commissioners approved the following items: to hold the Primary Election Canvass on Aug. 31 at 10 a.m.; approved to appoint Cordell to the canvass board in place of Doug Hendricks; the contract for construction of a small project with Haywire Earthwork, LLC to build a road at 1285 Evergreen in Moline; the 2026 Audit Agreement with Jarred Gilmore & Phillips not to exceed $21,000 and the 2028 Budget Preparation Agreement with Jarred Gilmore & Phillips at an estimated cost of $2,950.
Multiple executive sessions were held regarding various topics. After returning to open meeting, the following items were approved by the commission: merit increase for Julia Coble from $15.62 to $16.37 per hour; merit increase for Ernest Tousley from $17.38 to $17.88 per hour; merit increase for Nick Miller from $22.35 to $23.35 per hour; merit increase for Rob Boetefuer from $17.22 to $18.22 per hour and to adopt Resolution #2604 (a charter resolution exempting Elk County from certain provisions of KSA 62-201 ET SEQ, specifically KSA 62-202 regarding annual sanitary inspections of school buildings by the County Health Officer).
Warrants in the amount of $244,747.74 and Payroll in the amount of $312,494.97 were approved.
The next meeting of the Elk County Commissioners will be held on Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.
