During the Sept. 1 meeting of the Greenwood County Historical Society, plans for an open house showing of the newly restored Claycomb School building were discussed. It was decided to hold the Open House on Saturday, Sept. 26, during Eureka’s homecoming weekend, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The building will also be open for tours on Cattlemen’s Day, and is available during Museum hours by speaking to a museum staff member. There will also be special tours for school children grades 3-6 on Sept. 30. During the showings, video clips of the moving process of the building and images of the 100 plus rural schools that were in Greenwood County at one time will be shown.
Those present for the meeting were president Mike Pitko, Dana Mills, Taylor Hunt, John Bills, Stan Skaer, Gib Rhodes, Greg Rawlings, Jamie Lindamood, Rise Russin, Jan Stephens and Museum director Robin Himes.
President Pitko reported 35 visitors during the month of August from many states. Treasurer Mills gave the financial report noting that electricity costs were up due to extreme hot weather and internet costs were up because of a transfer of service.
Other business included a discussion of a recognition plaque for donors to the Claycomb school project and a report of a visiting musician who admired and played the antique piano and organ. Pitko reported 25 members of a family from Alabama who had ancestors from Greenwood County had visited. Director Himes shared plans to change displays in the Ditty Room to include family group donations. Future 5th Monday programs were discussed. Rawlings discussed concerns that old cemeteries on private properties may be disappearing when the property changes ownerships and how this might be avoided.
The next meeting of the Historical Society will be Tuesday, Oct. 6.
