Can you believe it? August is almost over and September starts next week. Time sure is flying by. It’s about time for the State Fair. Used to look forward to going there with the Eureka band. Didn’t particularly like the long parade, but it got us free admission to the fair.
We had our must-get things every year, like the salt water taffy made fresh; fried flour tacos at “Our Lady of Guadalupe’s” diner, giant soft pretzels, and to start things off we found out that if you go to the animal barns, starting early before lunch, you could get free samples of food made with whichever breed of animal was in that particular barn.
I remember several of my friends and myself playing some of the games to win stuffed animals, and we worked it out to where we each won one of the biggest at the water pistol game. We barely had room for ourselves in the bus seats on the way home! What fun we had.
Talented local artist, Harley Wayne, will be performing at Getty’s 76 Grand Opening Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. in Olpe, Front Porch Jams of Lyon County.

This Saturday is the third Saturday of the month. I wonder will anyone be set up and selling their homemade goodies and whatever fresh produce they have? I know I am not the only one who looked forward to the third Saturday.
Last month, Bridget Altis was the only one set up. She said she didn’t know if the Booster Club was still involved, but decided she still wanted to make goodies to sell to the public. Hopefully, more show up this Saturday. I don’t see why vendors can’t set up and sell their wares, whether or not the Booster Club is involved. I guess we’ll see come Saturday.
Answer: A whip. Those things really snap when cracked properly. Me and my brothers each had leather whips about 6’ long that our great Aunt and Uncle from Texas gave each of us.
The cool front that came through has sure been enjoyable. It’s wonderful to be able to open the doors and windows and let the fresh cool air in at night. Makes for better sleeping. I think anyway.

Saturday, Aug. 15 was a busy day in town. Several people gathered at the gym yard to help put up the new playground equipment. Money raised by several individuals and through fundraisers allowed for the purchase of some exciting new playground equipment. Work began shortly after 7 a.m. and continued all day until the main installation of equipment was complete.

The afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 15 had lots of people came to Toronto to help celebrate Jody Reynolds’s 80th birthday. Quite a turnout, with people coming from Florida, Oklahoma and places in and around Wichita. Many were former customers of hers from when she owned Hilltop for so many years, and many locals.
Stories were swapped and memories shared, many written down on “memory cards” that were passed out and asked to be filled out. Good food and great stories were on tap for the afternoon including the singing of Happy Birthday.

Answer: Reportedly completing more than 1,200 rounds of golf while in office was Woodrow Wilson. His doctor recommended he play for his health and he played nine holes daily and 18 holes on Saturday. Although he was never considered a skilled player, he played daily Monday thru Saturday, even in bad weather. During the winter, the Secret Service painted his golf balls so they could easily be found in the snow.
The heatwave is still going on. Yes, I know it’s August in Kansas, but c’mon, setting records because of heat is not my idea of a good time.
