Howard City Council

The Howard City Council meets bimonthly on the first and third Mondays of the month. The following report was generated from the official minutes of the June 15 meeting, which were approved during their most recent meeting on July 6.

Mayor Brad Baumgartel called the June 15 meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. at the Howard City Office with council members Shilo Crupper, Susan Galvan, Derek Cookson, Nick Miller, and Gary Harrod present. Also present: Clay Hunter, Aaron Kokesch, Jared Myers, Sarah Evans and City Clerk Joanna Hunter.

The council approved the June 1 meeting minutes as presented. After reviewing the city financial reports, the board approved the payment of bills, totaling $58,232.49.

Two executive sessions for personnel matters (subjects not included) were held. No action was taken.

The council approved the following: hiring BG Consultants to complete the annual C&D Closure Estimate; purchasing Utility and Accounting software from Jayhawk Software as quoted; supporting the Howard City Library efforts to obtain a CDBG grant for building improvements. The council noted the intent to apply for a similar grant next year for park improvements and approved to pay $10,000 for disassembly, labeling, and transport of play structure to Howard.

The council approved selling the unused chipspreader for $500.

Other discussion included: further crosstraining for employee Kokesch in all departments and in office procedures; All utility employees will keep detailed daily work logs and turn them in with time cards; Purchase of a dump truck will be applied to Street Department Capital Outlay; Play equipment to be installed at South Park; Councilmembers and City Clerk planning to research surface materials; Rescheduling first meeting in September tabled to July 20 meeting; Citywide cleanup was messy this year with people dumping items after hours and in nearby landowners property after hours. Suggested changes will be discussed at the next meeting along with scheduling an extra cleanup date; Gravel for street dept will be ordered; Tree trimming quote for West Park to be obtained; Alley behind Post Office and Signer’s will be leveled to prevent drainage problems.

The meeting adjourned at 8:44 p.m. The council also met on July 6. The next Howard City Council meeting is slated for July 20 at 7:30 p.m.
