JJ Smith

Republican

1. What interests you about serving in this role?

I believe in giving back to the community and ensuring that the voices of Greenwood County residents are heard. This role provides a unique opportunity to help shape the future of our county by making thoughtful, responsible decisions that improve the community for current and future generations.

I am committed to contributing to Greenwood County’s continued success by supporting responsible growth, fiscal accountability, and transparent leadership. I also want to help identify challenges before they become larger problems, curtail setbacks, and work collaboratively to find practical solutions that benefit all residents.

2. How do you prioritize competing demands with limited resources?

My priority will always be protecting our hard-earned tax dollars while keeping our families safe and our community moving forward. When resources are tight, we cannot afford to guess - we must triage.

Life and safety come first. Our law enforcement, EMS, fire and maintaining the roads our school buses and residents drive on are non-negotiable.

We must be smarter with what we have. I will push for zero-based budgeting, having each department justify every single dollar from scratch, rather than just rubber-stamping last year’s spending. Focusing strictly on needs before wants.

3. If elected, what would your top three priorities be during your first year?

1.Accountability by keeping the community informed with active updates on things I have worked on. Accountability starts at the top.

2. Strengthening/building all boards that are appointed by the county commissioners.

3.Assisting townships and communities within the county.

4. Please list personal information or other information you feel is important.

I am a thirty-year resident of Greenwood County. My greatest achievement has been raising my three children: Megan, Ashlyn and Jayden. I enjoyed my time coaching my kid’s youth sports and being a 4-H leader with the Fall River 55ers club. I am currently the Pleasant Grove township treasurer, on the Greenwood County Extension executive board, and Greenwood County Hospital Board.
