34,000 From Kansas Department Of Insurance

TOPEKA – Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announced recently that the Kansas Department of Insurance has made its annual distribution to local Fire- fighter Relief Associations (FRAs). Pursuant to the Kansas Firefighters Relief Act, $34,543.40 has been distributed among six local FRAs throughout Greenwood County.

"Firefighters put their lives on the line to keep us safe, and the Kansas Fire- fighters Relief Act acknowl edges that by providing additional protections for firefighters and their loved ones,” said Commissioner Schmidt. “The Act not only gives first responders need ed safety nets, but it also allows local communities to provide their citizens with improved firefighting equipment and resources.”

The funds from the Kan- sas Firefighters Relief Act are generated by a two percent tax paid by insur- ance companies on fire and lightning insurance premiums written in Kansas. Associations primarily use their distributed funds for insurance premiums and safety enhancements. The relief funds may pay for the health, accident, disability, and life insurance premiums of local firefight ers. Safety enhancements such as new firetrucks, fire station building improve- ments, and firefighting gear can be purchased via relief funds loaned to local governing entities.

This year’s statewide distributions totaled over $20.7 million, distributed to 552 FRAs.

The following FRA’s in Greenwood County received fundings: FRA#199 EUREKA F R A: $12,294.50; FRA#202 FALL RIVER FRA: $1,988.63; FRA#738 GREENWOOD COUNTY RURAL FD #1 FRA: $11,720.08; FRA#230 HAMILTON FRA: $2,190.69; FRA#296 MADISON FRA: $4,099.95; FRA#394 SEVERY F R A: $2,249.55.
