Summer is officially here. It began Sunday (and it felt like summer) with the Summer Solstice. It was also the longest day of the year, now the days will start getting shorter.
The southeast part of town experienced another blackout Sunday around 4 a.m. Once again, we were lucky that there was a cool front that came through with the rain, so I opened doors and windows again. Jack and John got the problem fixed in about 3 hours.
After the power came on, I turned on one porch light and shortly after turning it on I saw a city truck turn the corner and drive by. I waved and gave them a thumbs up and told them my power was back on and told them thank you. John Floyd called back and said, “Thank you for turning your porch light on. That lets us know you have power again.” I saw a thing on TV a few years ago where a lineman said that if everyone would turn their porch light on when the power comes back on, it would make their lives so much easier and it’s a simple way to be helpful.
What started in 2023 and has now reached its goal is the playground fund for the new playground equipment at the Toronto Gym. It all began with Elliott Hoag’s birthday fundraiser. Instead of doing something for herself, Elliot likes to raise money for good causes.
Having raised money for several other causes, she set her sights on new playground equipment for the old school yard. That goal has been reached and equipment has been ordered from Playscape Recreation, LLC. It will be built early this fall.

I had quite a scare the other evening. I let Taco out to potty and I usually lean against the handrail on the porch while he’s outside (he seems to think that if I’m not out there he can’t do anything), this time I thought a stick was laying there. I gave it a second look and noticed it was a snake, kind of doubled up there. It spooked me, I ran inside and grabbed the phone and called our friend Sandy DeLucia, thinking she had placed a dead one there since I had been teasing her about one getting into her apartment. While talking to her on the phone it moved, I yelled and she said something. I don’t remember what. I told her that Taco was outside and I couldn’t get him back in. She said she’d be right over.
Taco was standing at the door pacing, he wanted back in so I opened the door just a little bit and he scurried back in. Right after he got in, Sandy showed up with Amos and Kristin Cagle. Sandy quickly pinned it with a snake stick then reached up to grab it and it bit the finger of her glove. She grabbed it then behind its head and it curled around her arm several times.
She walked out to the west part of our yard and turned it loose. It was a King Snake and a very feisty one at that. Now, I do a double take before walking out onto the porch. Thankful to have friends who aren’t scared of snakes.
One more week until Toronto Days! The medallion hunt begins Monday, June 29 as well as pre-registration for the Big Cat fishing contest. Kids mud stomp and pizza is Thursday evening at 6 p.m., Horseshoes begin Friday morning at 10 a.m., Booster Club will have concessions at Toronto Point from 5-9 p.m. and the huge firework show begins at dusk with free entry into the Point. The rest of the fun begins Saturday morning.
