Testing was recently conducted at multiple locations around Eureka Lake as the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) monitored the lake for blue-green algae. Following sampling and evaluation, KDHE has lifted the blue-green algae advisory for Eureka Lake in Greenwood County.
However, KDHE has now issued a separate advisory for the swim beach at Eureka Lake due to elevated E. coli bacteria levels detected in the water.
Residents are advised to avoid contact with the water at the swim beach until further notice. Children and pets should not enter the water during the advisory period. The advisory applies only to the swim beach area and is separate from the previously lifted blue-green algae advisory.
According to KDHE, E. coli was detected only at the swim beach. Water samples collected from multiple locations around the lake as part of the bluegreen algae investigation did not result in additional E. coli advisories.
The source of the elevated bacteria levels is currently under investigation. KDHE will continue monitoring the area and will lift the advisory once follow-up testing confirms the water is safe for recreational contact.
Residents should continue to follow posted advisories and avoid entering the water at the swim beach until the advisory is removed.
