It’s done. It’s finally done. Cedar Creek Bridge is complete. The road/ bridge crew beat the waterline crew. One major job is over, now is the completion of the other job nearly done? We shall see.

(Intended For Last Week)

The Monday before Memorial weekend we had 1 6/10” in the rain gauge, then Friday we had 1”, and Sunday afternoon I dumped out 3/10”. Rain we desperately needed, more rain is in the forecast for this week. It always rains at least one day over Memorial weekend, sometimes more.

The waterline crew have been busy installing the new water meters around town. We got ours the other day. I talked to some of the guys and it won’t be much longer until they are done. Will we know how to act without crews working all over town and north of town? North of town will be great when we don’t have to stop for traffic lights anymore!

We offer our sympathy to the family and friends of Judy Works. We offer our sympathy to all others who lost loved ones this past week. May they all rest in peace.

We made our yearly visit to area cemeteries last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It was nice to see the cemeteries all nicely mowed and flowers on many of the graves. Thursday there were flags on the military graves.

Saw something interesting on the news the other night. It was about Taps being played at military funerals. I noticed several years ago that the man playing Taps wasn’t really playing. He had some kind of a recording device in the trumpet that he pushed a button and a recording played. I was shocked! I couldn’t believe that it was a fake playing of Taps. I always got chills during military funerals when Taps was played. If it was a recording being played on a portable stereo I could accept that, I just couldn’t believe a soldier holding a trumpet or bugle had a recording device stuck inside the instrument.

What I saw on the news was about an organization called “Taps for Veterans” that is encouraging people all across America, anyone who can play a bugle or trumpet and you don’t have to be a veteran, to register with them so you can be called upon to play Taps for a veterans funeral. The man that started it was shocked when the bugler at his father’s funeral pushed a button on the device inside his bugle and “played taps.” He said had he known it was going to be a recording, he would’ve played taps for his father.

This is such a neat idea that this man has started. He said, “Every service member deserved to have Taps played live at their funeral. That that was the least we could do as citizens.” I only wish I knew how to play Taps. But if you or a family member can play Taps on an instrument (the website shows a girl with a flute and another picture shows a guy with a trombone), contact “Taps for Veterans” and offer up your ability to play.

Getty’s 76 is open again under new management. Jason and Kristien Burhern (pronounced Born) who live on the east side of Toronto Lake have opened the bar. They enjoyed going in there and hated seeing it closed. They really like our little town and said everyone has been so welcoming.

The hours will be Tuesday - Saturday 3 p.m. midnight. During football season they will be open on Sundays noon - 7 p.m. and on Monday nights when the Chiefs play. Bartenders Cheryl Chandler and Liz Kennedy will be slinging drinks also.

All activities that took place before, like pool tournaments and trivia nights will get started back soon.

We hope everyone had a fun, safe Memorial weekend and got your summer kicked off without any injuries, damage or ER visits.
