To the Editor, There is something about our justice system that I believe more people should understand, and that is the actual role of a prosecutor.

A prosecutor is not supposed to simply pursue charges or try to secure convictions. Their duty, first and foremost, is to seek justice. That means looking at all the facts, not just the ones that support a case. It means being fair, not just effective. And it means making sure the right outcome is reached, not just any outcome.

That distinction matters more than people realize.

Most people assume that if charges are brought, there must be a strong reason behind them. But the truth is, once a case is filed, the process can take on a life of its own. It becomes less about asking whether something should be pursued, and more about pushing it forward through the system.

From my own experience, it can feel like once you are in that position, you are no longer dealing with a search for truth—you are dealing with a process that is focused on proving something, whether it fully adds up or not.

That is where concern should begin.

A prosecutor holds a great deal of power. They can decide what charges to bring, how far to take a case, and whether to continue even when questions arise. That kind of authority requires judgment, restraint, and a commitment to fairness.

If that balance is lost, the consequences fall on the individual standing in front of the system.

This is not about criticizing the role itself. It is about understanding how important it is that the role is carried out the way it was intended.

Justice is not supposed to be one-sided. It is not supposed to be about winning. It is supposed to be about getting it right.

And that is something worth paying attention to.

Respectfully, Jeremy Austin Eureka, Kansas
