Routine Business Meeting Held By Greenwood County Commission

Several items were discussed during the routine weekly meeting of the Greenwood County Commission on Monday, May 4, including the approval for two county residents to receive funds through the Kansas Rural Opportunity Zones (ROZ) program.

Clerk Deann McCaffree shared a listing of those who applied, further noting that two individuals qualified for the student loan repayment program. The Kansas ROZ program offers up to $15,000 in student loan forgiveness ($3,000 annually for 5 years) for individuals moving to participating rural counties. Participants must hold a degree, have active student loans, and secure a county or employer sponsor, with 95 of 105 Kansas counties currently qualifying. The commission approved to continue with the program.

A brief discussion was held regarding the pending pay scale and policy, with Emergency Manager Levi Vinson planning to present the final draft for commission review next Monday.

Clerk McCaffree shared that Darla Hampton had taken the position of payroll clerk at $19.38/hour.

A 10-minute executive session for personnel (evaluation) was held with County Counselor Paul Dean. The commission also held a 15-minute executive session for legal matters with Dean. No action was taken following either session.

EMS Director Brian Mongeau informed the commission of a recent incident in which an ambulance struck a deer while responding to a call near Madison. The vehicle sustained damage to its front corner and a door, but remained operable and completed the call. No injuries were reported. Mongeau said repair bids will be obtained.

Commissioner Roy Ballard shared correspondence from the City of Severy regarding plans to install a permanent barrier around an underground well at Main Street and Kansas Avenue. While the city intends to cover the cost, it requested the county’s blessing. Commissioners expressed support but will consult with County Engineer Michael Marris before moving forward.

It was shared that a bid from Ford, regarding a spray truck for the Noxious Weed Department, was still being gathered.

Darren Booth, with Freedom Claims Management, Inc., provided a first-quarter health insurance report to the commission.

Special payables for May 4, totaling $1,088.40, and the minutes from the April 27 meeting were approved as presented.

A road viewing will be held in Otter Creek Township on Monday, May 18, at 11 a.m. See public notice on page 11.

The next Greenwood County Commission meeting is Monday, May 11, at 9 a.m. The monthly Eureka Township meeting will follow.
