The Kansas Quarter Horse Racing Association (KQHRA) has formally approved the organizational license application submitted by the Greenwood County Fair Association (GCFA) for the proposed fall race meet at Eureka Downs.
The proposed meet is scheduled to begin the last week of September and will include 12 days of live racing, held on Saturdays and Sundays. This approval follows a comprehensive review process involving the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission (KRGC) and the GCFA. After identifying and discussing key considerations regarding purse structure, breed allocation, and meet viability, the KQHRA has elected to proceed in good faith based on assurances received from both parties.
The application now proceeds with the KRGC for formal review and consideration. The KRGC will evaluate the application in accordance with the Kansas statutes and regulatory requirements governing organizational licensure.
In parallel with the regulatory process, GCFA has selected a track construction contractor. Preparations for facility improvements are expected to begin shortly as these upgrades are a key component in delivering a safe, compliant, and competitive environment ahead of the fall racing season.
Kurt Eck, President of KQHRA, noted that this is a significant step towards restoring live racing at Eureka Downs and is imperative to advancing the Kansas state racing industry. He expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts of the KRGC and GCFA.
With Quarter Horses representing over 80% of the registered Kansasbred population currently, theKQHRA will remain actively engaged with all stakeholders as the final program details are refined in the coming month. KQHRA would like to emphasize that continued coordination among stakeholders will be essential as the process advances.
