During its routine monthly meeting on Monday, April 13, the Eureka USD 389 Board of Education approved hiring various coaching staff for the next school year.
After approving Shelly Hoyt’s resignation from Special Education Teacher and High School Girls Basketball Coach, the board approved to hire Brendan Ptacek to move from assistant to head girls basketball coach and to hire Cady Ptacek as the assistant.
The board also named Giovanny Garcia as the head junior high football coach and Matt Mettling as his assistant. Garcia was also hired as an assistant high school baseball coach for the current season.
The board also accepted a resignation from Jessica Elliott, 6th-grade teacher, and approved the following summer school employments: Title: Teachers: Cammie Hoover, Misty Lazar, Lindsey Stapleford
and Katie Ring; Paras: Rhonda Ward, Laura Wallace and Betty Crisswell; Special Education: Teacher: Chelsey Brodie; and Paras: Ammie Morgan, Kendal Hollis, Mercedes Beckley and Amie Mead.
During administrative reports, Eureka Junior Senior High School (EJSHS) Principal Angie Lowe shared that EJSHS was once again named as an All Star High School. The program began in 2022 and extends the Apply Kansas mission to enhance college access by guiding students through the application process. Students in these schools receive support in completing admissions applications, seeking financial aid, and celebrating all postsecondary paths. In order to qualify, schools must host an Apply Kansas Application event, host a FAFSA completion event and host a college/ senior signing day.

This was the third consecutive year for EJSHS to be named as an All Star High School. This year, 219 high schools in Kansas met the requirements. EJSHS Assistant Principal/ Athletic Director Joe Thornburg, Marshall Elementary Principal Stacy Coulter and Superintendent Scott Hoyt also gave administrative reports.
District Technology Director Bill Pitko presented the spring technology proposal, seeking the approval of 55 13-inch Mac-Book Neo, with the Apple A18 Pro chip. The board approved to purchase the devices at a discounted rate of $494 each, for a grand total of $27,170.
The District Leadership Team, comprised of Trint Peine, Cammie Hoover, Laura Neill, Klanci Wiggins, Mindy Westerman, Faith Rucker and Anna Noble, shared a KESA presentation. They shared details regarding the Kansas School Improvement Model and the School Improvement Day, where they met with Cherryvale, Neodesha, Southeast and Girard staff members.
The board also approved the KASB Contract for the 2026-27 school year, student enrollment capacity, LEA assurances and the 2024-25 audit as presented.
