A new aviation event is scheduled to take flight on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting, at the Eureka Municipal Airport, located at 1667 P Road, in Eureka. A rain date has been set for May 2. The inaugural gathering, sponsored by the Chisholm Trail EAA Chapter 1631 of Wellington, aims to introduce young people to the world of aviation through hands-on experiences and free airplane rides.
The day’s activities will begin early, with breakfast available for purchase starting at 8 a.m. Lunch will also be offered for a fee beginning at 11 a.m.
A highlight of the day will be the Young Eagles flights, offering free airplane rides for youth ages 8 to 17. These flights are made possible by local volunteer pilots who are members of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). Each participating pilot is fully certificated through the Federal Aviation Administration or Transport Canada and has completed youth protection training, including background checks, to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for participants.
Before takeoff, pilots will guide young flyers through a pre-flight experience, explaining the basics of how airplanes work, reviewing aeronautical charts, and introducing the aircraft’s interior, including the instrument panel. This educational component is designed to build understanding and excitement ahead of the flight.
Safety remains a central focus throughout the event. Attendees are reminded to follow all instructions from pilots and ground crew, avoid propeller areas, and remain escorted when on the ramp. These precautions help ensure a secure experience for everyone involved.
Once airborne, participants will spend approximately 15-20 minutes in flight, offering a memorable introduction to aviation. For many, organizers say, this first experience in the air can spark a lifelong passion.
Community members are encouraged to attend, support the event, and take part in a day dedicated to education, safety, and the thrill of flight.
