County Courthouse To Be Closed During The Noon Hour This Thursday

Routine Business Discussed During Short Meeting

During a short meeting on Monday, April 13, the Greenwood County Commission heard a request for possible road maintenance assistance, floodplain updates, and approved a temporary courthouse closure to allow employees to attend a district luncheon.

In new business, Fall River Mayor Brendan Coulter asked commissioners whether the county could assist with maintaining city roadways. Coulter explained that Fall River has previously contracted with Salt Springs Township for grading work, but the township’s former grader operator is now employed by the county and is no longer available. He added that recent efforts to hire local contractors have been unsuccessful. Commissioners expressed concern about taking on such services due to existing staffing limitations and workload demands. Road and Bridge Administrative Assistant Kassie Lazar said she would provide Coulter with a list of available contractors.

Emergency Management Director Levi Vinson provided a brief update on the floodplain mapping process following a meeting held last week. He noted that the process will soon open for public comment, particularly for residents located within designated floodplain zones. Once materials are ready, mailers will be distributed by the county and participating cities. Officials are planning a public meeting in June to allow residents to review the data and provide feedback. The final approval for the floodplain, by FEMA, is expected in 2029-2030.

Register of Deeds Sheila Smith and Treasurer Stacie Pearse reminded the commission of the SEK District meeting on Thursday, April 16. They also asked that the county courthouse be closed from 12-1 p.m. to allow all county employees to attend the luncheon. The commission approved the request, 4-0, with Mac Obourn not voting on the matter. Smith and Pearse also noted that 17 counties were invited to the meeting, with approximately 130 representatives planning to attend from those 17 counties. Greenwood County hosts the district meeting every eight years. The Greenwood County Courthouse will be closed on Thursday, April 16 during the noon hour.

A health and public safety complaint was received regarding junk tires/cars on a Neal property. County Counselor Paul Dean was going to review and mail a demand letter to the property owner(s).

Commissioner Obourn inquired about a culvert repair on M50 Road. Lazar reported that while several projects are ahead of it, the repair is included on the county’s list.

The commission approved the April 6 meeting minutes, special payables for April 13, totaling $1,781.51; regular payables for April 17, totaling $222,132.03; and regular payroll for April 17, totaling $158,591.03.

The meeting adjourned at 9:26 a.m.

Following the meeting, the commission held a work session with elected department heads regarding the pay scale. The commission then held the monthly Eureka Township meeting.

The next Greenwood County Commission meeting is slated for Monday, April 20 at 9 a.m., in the Greenwood County Courthouse commission meeting room.
