Eureka Placed Third At 2A State Basketball; Defeating Defending Champions Moundridge, 61-49

Less than 24 hours after a heartbreaking semifinal loss, the Eureka Lady Tornadoes had to regroup and return to the hardwood for one final battle. The consolation game matched Eureka against the defending state champion Moundridge Wildcats, who had entered the tournament as the favorite before being upset by a red-hot Salina Sacred Heart squad.

It quickly became a test of which team could recover from the emotional losses the day before. But as they had done throughout the postseason, the Lady Tornadoes leaned on each other, believed in each other, and fought together. That determination led to another historic moment for the program as Eureka defeated Moundridge 61-49 to bring home the thirdplace trophy. After Moundridge won the opening tip, both teams came up empty on their first possessions. The Wildcats struck first after a Eureka foul, hitting one of two free throws. Eureka answered on the next trip down the floor with a well-executed baseline outof- bounds play as Brenna Rucker found Elle Coulter for a basket.

Moundridge responded with a put-back off an offensive rebound, but Rucker quickly took control, going on a 6-0 run of her own. The quarter ended with a huge momentum boost when Sydney Lindamood knocked down a three-pointer, giving Eureka an 11-7 lead after one.

In the second quarter, Rucker and Coulter stole the show, combining to score all 16 of Eureka’s points in the period. The Wildcats opened the quarter with a layup off a Eureka turnover, but Rucker answered with a smooth turnaround jumper. The teams traded baskets throughout the quarter as Rucker and Coulter repeatedly sliced through the Moundridge defense. Rucker poured in 10 points in the quarter while Coulter added 6, helping Eureka take a 27–19 lead into halftime.

Eureka looked to extend the lead early in the third when Rucker opened the half with a three-pointer.

However, the Lady Tornado offense went cold while Moundridge heated up. The Wildcats went on a strong run and outscored Eureka 19-10 in the third quarter, taking the lead heading into the final period.

But the Lady Tornadoes were far from finished. Showing incredible determination and grit, Eureka responded with its best quarter of the game. The Lady Tornadoes exploded for 25 fourth-quarter points while holding Moundridge to just 11. Big-time three- pointers from Britta Mongeau and Arabella Shepherd midway through the quarter swung the momentum back to Eureka, while Alaina Westerman and Coulter finished tough baskets at the rim when the pressure was at its highest.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Tornadoes had secured a 6149 victory and a place in school history.

Rucker led the way with 28 points, followed by Coulter with 14, Mongeau with 9, Shepherd and Lindamood with 3 each, and Westerman and Hannah Perrier with 2 apiece.

The Lady Tornadoes’ miracle run was about far more than wins and losses. It reflected their deep love for one another, the count-less unseen hours spent in the gym, and a faith that carried them through every challenge along the way. Through every high and low, this team believed that their journey had purpose, trusting that in ALL things, God works for the good of those who believe.

Eureka finished the season with a 24-3 record, were the champions of the Wildcat Classic Tournament, the War on 54 Tournament, 2A Substate Champions, and 2A State 3rd place finishers.
