Lady Tornadoes Headed Back To The Big Stage

Lady Tornadoes Headed Back To The Big Stage

For the fourth time in school history, the Eureka Lady Tornado basketball team is returning to the biggest stage of the year.

Eureka went 3-0 during the Northeast Arma Sub-State 2 tournament, claiming their fourth sub-state championship title.

The Lady Tornadoes will travel to Salina on Tuesday, March 10 for quarterfinal action against Oakley. The winner will advance to semifinal action in Emporia on Thursday, March 12. See related article.

Eureka opened the tournament by hosting the Wildcats of Oxford in the sub-state quarterfinal. The Tornadoes claimed a 76-11 win and moved on to host Chase County for a second matchup on the season. The Tornadoes once again claimed the victory, this time 53-25 and advanced to the championship game against Northeast Arma on their home court.

Championship

In the 2A Substate Championship, Eureka traveled to face the host Northeast Vikings with a state tournament berth on the line. The moment wasn’t too big for the Lady Tornadoes, who delivered a dominant performance to secure their fourth trip to state in the past eight seasons.

Britta Mongeau ignited Eureka early, drilling a corner three-pointer on the opening possession.

Northeast answered with a three of their own and followed with a bucket to briefly take the lead.

The two teams traded baskets in a fast-paced start before Eureka seized control late in the quarter. With just under two minutes remaining, the Lady Tornadoes erupted on an 11-1 run to close the frame and take a commanding 2311 lead.

Eureka struck first again in the second quarter when Brenna Rucker found Mongeau streaking down the floor for an easy layup. The Lady Tornado defense tightened its grip while the offense weathered a brief cold stretch of more than three minutes. Once the shots began to fall, Eureka closed the half on another surge, finishing with a 10-2 run to build a 37-15 halftime advantage.

The third quarter opened with the Lady Tornadoes settling for perimeter shots that wouldn’t fall, allowing the Vikings to chip in four early points. Rucker quickly shifted the momentum, snagging multiple steals and converting them into transition layups. She then set up Milly Koop for a strong finish at the rim, and Lydia Mason buried a three-pointer to extend the lead to 48-21 heading into the final quarter.

With eight minutes standing between Eureka and another state appearance, the Lady Tornado defense delivered. The Vikings were held to just four fourth-quarter points. Sydney Lindamood matched that output herself with a three-pointer and a strong finish inside, while Arabella Shepherd knocked down a three-pointer to put the finishing touches on the championship performance. Eureka won the game 56-25.

Rucker led the way with 15 points and delivered another dominant all-around performance, recording a double-double with 15 rebounds. She also dished out 8 assists, blocked 3 shots, and grabbed 4 steals. Elle Coulter added 10 points, Shepherd scored 9 points and distributed 5 assists, and Mongeau finished with 8 points and 5 rebounds, Mason and Lindamood each contributed 5 points, while Koop and Alaina Westerman added 2 each.

Semifinal

The stakes were higher and the stage was bigger last Tuesday night, March 3 as the Eureka Lady Tornadoes hosted Chase County Bulldogs in semifinal action of the substate tournament. The two teams met earlier in February with Eureka claiming a 42-27 win, but the Bulldogs entered the rematch with renewed confidence and momentum. Chase County welcomed back its 6-foot-2 star, Madelyn Wilson, who returned from a volleyball-season injury and helped spark a sixgame winning streak. With Wilson anchoring the middle, the Bulldogs believed the second meeting would be different.

Eureka controlled the opening tip but couldn’t convert, as both defenses set a physical, high-intensity tone. More than two minutes ticked off the clock before Chase County broke through with a runout layup off a rebound. Wilson added one of two free throws to give the visitors a 3–0 edge. The Lady Tornadoes finally found their rhythm midway through the first quarter. Coulter kicked the ball to Shepherd in the corner, where Shepherd calmly buried an open three-pointer to ignite the home crowd. Fueled by relentless defense, Eureka seized control. Hannah Perrier jumped a passing lane for a steal and coastto- coast layup, keying a dominant 12-0 run to close the quarter.

Shepherd stayed hot in the second frame, knocking down back-to-back threes to stretch the lead. Chase County responded with a late 6-0 surge, but Eureka carried a 20-13 advantage into halftime.

The Wildcats struck first after the break, trimming the margin before Coulter answered with a smooth floater in the lane. Chase County clawed within five, but the Tornadoes responded again, this time with an 11-2 burst that pushed the lead to 32-20 entering the fourth.

The final quarter belonged entirely to Eureka. The Lady Tornadoes caught fire from beyond the arc as Mason and Mongeau combined for five three-pointers. The defensive intensity never let up, holding the Wildcats to just five points in the period and turning the game into a runaway. Eureka advanced with a commanding 53–25 victory.

Shepherd led the way with 17 points, while Mason added 11. Coulter filled the stat sheet with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Rucker scored 8 points and delivered a defensive masterclass, pulling down 10 rebounds to go with 7 steals, 2 blocks, and 4 assists. Mongeau chipped in 6 points, and Perrier added 2.
