Lady Tornado senior Harlie Owings claimed her second state medal over the weekend, as she placed fifth at the 3-2-1A State Wrestling tournament in Hays, in the 170-pound class.
Owings claimed her first two victories with decisions over Jaelene Vestal of Wichita County and Lola O’Neil of Sabetha. In semi-final action, she faced Lillian Garcia of Pla-inville, and lost by tech fall to Garcia who later went on to win the state title. Owings then fell to Sophia Kane (Norton Community) in the consolation semifinal by fall (Fall 4:49). Kane went on to place fourth. Owings then faced Trynity Pope (Stafford) where she claimed a 7-1 decision to place 5th.
Owings concluded her senior year with a 35-8 overall record and a career record of 107-58.
Owings claimed third place in the same division during her junior year. This was her second state appearance.
She has signed to wrestle for the Baker University Women’s wrestling team next fall.
Also representing Eureka at the 3-2-1A State Wrestling Tournament were juniors Maela Neill (125) and Mason Hughes (126); sophomore Killian Harrington (285); and freshmen Emma Baumgartel (110), Maddox Hughes (120) and Tate Scott (132). This was also the second state appearance for Neill, Mason Hughes and Harrington and the first state appearance for Baumgartel, Maddox Hughes and Scott.
