Residents across Kansas are encouraged to prepare for the upcoming severe weather season as Severe Weather Awareness Week takes place March 2–6. The statewide tornado drill is scheduled for this Wednesday, March 4, at 10 a.m.
The National Weather Service office in Wichita announced that its annual Storm Fury on the Plains storm identification and safety training series officially began recently. The program provides critical information on storm development, severe weather safety, and how residents can assist as trained storm spotters.
The trainings are free and open to the public. A complete schedule of sessions is available through the National Weather Service, and community members are encouraged to attend and help spread the word.
As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, the statewide tornado drill on March 4 will simulate real warning conditions. The test will activate NOAA Weather Radio alerts but will not send alerts to cell phones, consistent with previous years.
In addition, a special storm spotter training session will be held March 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Eureka Junior/ Senior High School in Eureka.
Moving forward, the weekly storm siren will be tested on Tuesdays at 1 p.m., (weather permitting) within Greenwood County.
