Charles M. Lane

Charles M. Lane, 83, of rural Severy, passed away, Friday, February 6, 2026 at the Eureka Nursing Center where he had been a resident for the last two years.

He was born July 26, 1942, in Eureka, Kansas the son of Minnard and Bernice Spain Lane. Charlie graduated from Eureka High School with the Class of 1960. He later attended Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kansas.

While in Jr. High School, Charlie took a job sacking groceries in a grocery store in Eureka. For the next 50 years he worked in various grocery stores in one position or another, eventually owning his own store. After selling his store, he went back to work as a produce manager. Three generations of children knew Charlie always had free candy to pass out at the produce counter.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Minnard “Mutt” and Bernice Spain Lane. He is survived by numerous cousins and a community of friends. He never met a stranger and would always take time to visit with anyone at any time. He was known to introduce himself as “Just a poor old dumb country boy.”

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, February 13, 2026, at the Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hand In Hand Hospice and sent in care of the VanArsdale Funeral Home, P.O. Box #488, Madison, Kansas 66860.
