The West Elk Patriots hosted the Oxford Wildcats on Friday, Feb. 13, for a night of basketball held in conjunction with the school’s annual winter royalty festivities.
West Elk split wins with the Wildcats, with the girls walking away with a 38-31 victory and the boys suffering a 42-88 loss.
The West Elk girls used a strong second quarter to build momentum and held off Oxford down the stretch for the seven-point win.
West Elk trailed slightly after the first quarter, 11-12, but responded with a 13-7 advantage in the second period to take a 24-19 lead into halftime. The Lady Patriots’ defense clamped down in the third quarter, limiting Oxford to just two points while adding five of their own to extend the lead. West Elk was outscored by the Wildcats in the final quarter, 9-10, but West Elk maintained control to seal the 38-31 victory. Scoring for the Lady Patriots were Emily Mott 14, Avery Avalos 7, Rachel Humphrey and Ava Denton each with 6 and Lillian Triboulet 5.
In the boys contest, Oxford used a high-powered offensive attack to secure the win. The Wildcats jumped out to a 23-13 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage with a 25-point second quarter to take a 48-22 halftime lead. Oxford continued its strong play in the third period, scoring 33 points to put the game out of reach. Both teams scored seven points in the final quarter. The Patriots lost the game, 42-88. Scoring for West Elk were Peyton Fechter 13, Jaxson Bogdahn 7, Jayton Bogdahn 6, Colbe Wehling 5, Jacob Tucker and Brycen Hobbs each with 4 and Gage Cook with 3.
