Lady Tornadoes Defend Home Court Against 3A Garden Plain

A traditionally strong 3A Garden Plain squad rolled into Eureka looking to knock off its second ranked 2A opponent in back-toback games. Fresh off a big win over #6 ranked 2A Conway Springs, the Owls entered with an 11–5 record, their only losses coming to highly ranked teams.

But the Eureka Lady Tornadoes had other plans. In front of an electric home crowd, Eureka relied on grit, defense, and a dominant fourth quarter to secure a 47–34 victory.

From the opening possession, it was clear the game would be a defensive battle. Senior standout Brenna Rucker set the tone early with a turnaround jumper in the lane. The Owls responded with four quick points, but Rucker answered once again to keep Eureka going.

The Lady Tornadoes found their touch from beyond the arc in the first quarter as Elle Coulter, Lydia Mason, and Britta Mongeau each knocked down three-pointers. After one quarter of play, Eureka held a slim 16–13 advantage.

The second quarter turned into a defensive grind. Nearly three minutes passed before either team scored, until Mongeau broke the drought by hitting one of two free throws. Rucker followed with five points of her own, and Eureka’s defense clamped down, holding Garden Plain to just four points in the period. The Lady Tornadoes took a 22–17 lead into halftime.

Garden Plain opened the third quarter with possession, but Arabella Shepherd quickly shifted momentum with a steal that led to a Mongeau three-pointer off a Rucker assist. The quarter remained back-and-forth throughout, with the Owls narrowly edging Eureka 10–9 in the frame. Still, the Lady Tornadoes maintained control heading into the final period.

Then came the fourth quarter, and it belonged entirely to Rucker. Slicing through defenders, finishing through contact, dominating the boards, and calmly stepping to the freethrow line, Rucker poured in 16 fourth-quarter points alone, outscoring the entire Garden Plain team, which managed just seven points in the final stanza. She sealed the victory by shooting a phenomenal 15-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Rucker finished with yet another double-double, tallying 31 points, 11 rebounds, and a team-high four assists. Mongeau added seven points, Coulter chipped in four, Mason contributed three, and Hannah Perrier added two points and five rebounds.
