John Mock, a decorated World War II veteran and longtime Eureka resident, died peacefully Feb. 6, 2026, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. He was 100.
Mock grew up on a Greenwood County farm before being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. Serving as a rifleman in Germany, he rose to the rank of corporal and endured 99 days as a prisoner of war before liberation. His military honors included the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, and multiple service medals. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Memorial services will be held Feb.16 at Greenwood Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Post 2712. A complete obituary can be found on page 4 of this week’s edition.
