Eureka High School wrestlers turned in a solid weekend of competition with multiple podium finishes at the SEK Girls Wrestling Invitational in Chanute on Friday, Jan. 30, followed by strong performances at the Wichita South Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 31. At the SEK Girls Invitational, Eureka placed three wrestlers on the podium. Lady Tornadoes Emma Baumgartel (110), Maela Neill (125) and Harlie Owings (170) all claimed third place honors.
In the SEK JV Girls Invitational, Chevelle Chastain placed fourth in the 139144 weight class after suffering an injury default loss to Neodesha’s Rylyn Winebrenner.
Wrestlers continued action on Saturday, Jan. 31 in Wichita at the Wichita South Girls Invitational and Wichita South Boys JV Invitational.
Lady Tornadoes Baumgartel and Neill both battled their way to the championship, but came up short in the finals to claim second place in their weight brackets. Lady Tornado Owings claimed three falls during the tournament and claimed third place honors. In the JV Boys division, Eureka’s Christian Sanchez led the way with a third-place finish at 126 pounds.

She received a bye; won by fall over Aryona Breiner (Pittsburg) 1-12 (Fall 1:17); lost by fall to Jarynn Hockett (Chanute) 22-7 (Fall 0:53); won by fall over Lylah Ritchie (Parsons) 3-7 (Fall 2:38); and won by fall over Adrianna Powell (Augusta) 13-10 (Fall 2:54).
125: Maela Neill (22-12) placed 3rd. She received a bye; won by injury default over Addison Augustine (Independence) 22-9 (Inj. 4:22); lost by fall to Bryleigh Rigdon (Caney Valley) 21-5 (Fall 4:30); won by fall over Emily Kennedy (Chanute) 18-15 (Fall 2:51); and won by fall over Ma`Kiah Collins (Cherryvale) 19-10 (Fall 1:52).
170: Harlie Owings (244) placed 3rd. She received a bye; won by fall over Tristin Ward (Cherryvale) 8-12 (Fall 4:14); lost by fall to Jaida Hawkins (Kansas City-Washington) 18-2 (Fall 3:46); won by fall over Taylie Schaub (Fort Scott) 17-13 (Fall 2:55); and won by fall over Jazmyn Kaufman (Girard) 19-7 (Fall 1:44).

110: Emma Baumgartel (24-14) placed 2nd. She won by fall over Yoselin Yanez-Juarez (Wichita- Southeast) 9-19 (Fall 1:44); won a 15-0 tech fall over Kaci Stephenson (Derby) 25-15 (TF-1.5 2:53); and lost by fall to Aseante Deshazer (Wichita-West HS) 25-11 (Fall 4:59).
125: Maela Neill (24-13) placed 2nd. She won by fall over Jayella Banuelos (Wichita-Northwest) 3-5 (Fall 1:44); won by fall over Malila Woods (Wichita- East) 16-1 (Fall 2:33); and lost by fall to Aubrey Winegarner (Wichita- West) 31-6 (Fall 5:24).
170: Harlie Owings (27-5) placed 3rd. She won by fall over Jahzara Lopez (Wichita- South) 13-13 (Fall 1:33); lost by fall to Christiana Buckles-Camarillo (Wichita- West) 23-10 (Fall 2:39); won by fall over Braelyn Morris (Bonner Springs) 11-9 (Fall 5:00); and won by fall over Aariah Remmert (Wichita-Northwest) 15-11 (Fall 1:17).
Wichita South JV Boys BOYS 126: Christian Sanchez placed 3rd. He won by fall over Anthony Mata (Wichita-West) (Fall 2:00); won a 13-2 major decision over Bentley Christner (Nickerson); lost a 3-9 decision to Asher Altman (Derby); won a 15-0 tech fall over Andrew Spelic (Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS); and won a 7-5 decision over Landyn Richardson (Wichita-South) BOYS 132: Brayden Buck lost a 0-17 tech fall to Owen Harris (Nickerson HS); received a bye; and lost by fall to Brycen Perry (Derby) (Fall 1:35).
BOYS 144: Jayden Heit won by fall over Manuel Cabrera (Wichita-South HS) (Fall 1:05); lost a 3-7 decision to Justin Shockey (Derby); won by fall over Parker Franke (Wellington) (Fall 0:20); won a 12-10 decision over Najay Harris (Wichita-South) and lost a 2-18 tech fall to Elijah Coffer (Newton).
BOYS 150: Darby Newman received a bye; lost a 4-13 major decision to Reshon Shell (Derby); won a 13-0 major decision over Hunter Swartz; and lost a 1-18 tech fall to Evan Steinmetz (Newton).
