Two Structure Fires Reported in Eureka During Freezing Temperatures
517 N. Adams St.

The Eureka Fire Department (EFD) responded to two separate structure fires on Sunday, Jan. 25 amid freezing cold temperatures. Both incidents are believed to have been electrical in nature, and no injuries were reported.

517 N. Adams St.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the EFD was dispatched to 517 N. Adams St. for a possible structure fire, after a neighbor witnessed smoke coming from the eaves of the residence. They were able to get the occupant to safety while first responders were en route. While en route, crews were notified of heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. Once on scene, crews were able to locate the fire in the attic and extinguish the fire. Assistance was provided by Greenwood County Fire: Reece and Central divisions, along with Greenwood County EMS. The cause of the fire was deemed to be electrical in nature. Fire crews cleared the scene at 5:07 p.m.

The home is owned by David “Digger” Deauman.

214 W. 4th St.

Earlier that morning, at approximately 4:15 a.m., the EFD was called to a structure fire at 214 W. 4th St. in Eureka. According to EFD Chief Luke Westerman, the fire began inside the walls of the home and spread upward into the attic. The attic sustained fire damage, while the first story experienced smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire was believed to have been caused from several space heaters overloading the old electrical in the home.

Fire crews remained on scene for several hours and were cleared at 7:48 a.m.

Following the fire, the affected residents are in need of several items, including men’s pants in sizes 33x32 and 36x30, men’s shirts in large and extra-large, as well as pillows and blankets.

Donations may be sent in care of The Eureka Herald, P.O. Box 590, Eureka, KS 67045. Checks should be made payable to Lance White.

On Dec. 27, the EFD responded to 600 N. Sycamore for an exterior structure fire. The cause of the fire was deemed to be an unattended barbecue grill.
