Despite winter weather forcing a schedule change, the Eureka Invitational still delivered a full day of competitive wrestling and memorable performances. With inclement weather expected on Saturday, tournament officials moved the event to Friday. Due to illness and potential weather concerns, several schools (seven boys and five girls teams) withdrew from the tournament. Even so, wrestlers and fans who made the trip were treated to a strong field, quality matchups, and plenty of action on the mats.
On the boys’ side, Caney Valley claimed the team title with 181 points, ahead of Winfield, 161 and Newton, 157.5. Rossville and Columbus rounded out the top five. Eureka finished tied for 11th with 46 points.
Tornado freshman Tate Scott, 132, turned in one of Eureka’s top performances, placing third after going 4-1 for the day and recording three pins. Eureka junior Mason Hughes,126, battled his way to a fourthplace finish, highlighted by a first-period pin and a dominant technical fall. Freshman Maddox Hughes, 120, placed fifth and sophomore Jesse Reneau, 285, placed sixth.
In the girls’ tournament, Newton captured the team championship with 185 points, followed by Cherryvale and Columbus. Eureka finished tied for 11th with 44.5 points.
At the 6th Annual Eureka Women’s Invitational, Tornado senior Harlie Owings, 170, continued her dominant season, capturing first place with three consecutive falls to improve her record to 213.
