The Eureka Junior High Tornado basketball teams were challenged last week as they faced the Bullpups of Caney and Yellowjackets of Fredonia.
Eureka hosted the Bullpups on Monday, Jan. 12, where the Ladies came away with both victories for the Tornadoes.
Despite trailing 4-8 in the opening quarter and7-10 at halftime, the Lady Tornadoes A-team dominated the second half. Eureka led 1712 after the third and went on to score 13 in the final stanza to win the game 30-16. Scoring for Eureka were Molly Dehlinger 8, Bella Damron 6, Alivia Hare and Khloe Crisswell each with 4, Kaylee Palmer 3, Braxtyn Evenson and Raegen Ashlock each with 2 and Mia Ptacek 1.
Eureka’s B-team played two-quarters, where the Tornadoes dominated the opening quarter, 10-0. The Bullpups would go on a 6-0 run over the Tornadoes but the commanding first quarter proved to be enough and Eureka won the game, 106. Scoring for Eureka were Kinsley Cox and Evenson each with 4 and Crisswell 2.
Eureka’s A-team boys were outmatched by the Bullpups, who held the Tornadoes scoreless in the first half. Eureka trailed 0-29 at the intermission. After the break, the Tornadoes were able to get on the board but trailed 9-46. Eureka lost the game 11-61. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Cord Adkins 7 and Felix Neill 4.
In B-team action, the boys faced the same demise, trailing 0-21 after the first quarter. Eureka trailed 2-36 at the half and 4-46 going into the final quarter. The Tornadoes lost 4-49. Eureka’s Jessn Ogden tallied all four points.
Eureka’s C-team boys were able to play four quarters, but were also outmatched by the Bullpups. The Tornadoes trailed 1-15 after one, 5-20 after two and 8-40 after three.
The score remained unchanged in the fourth and Eureka lost the game 8-40. Scoring for Eureka were Blake Wells 4 and Landon Noonan and Asher Euler each with 2.
Against Fredonia
The Tornadoes made the short trip to Fredonia on Thursday, Jan. 15, where Eureka went 1-3 for the evening.
Eureka’s A-team girls battled the Yellowjackets, trailing 8-11 after the first but closed the gap in the second, trailing 18-19 going into halftime. Eureka would hang with Fredonia, and remained within one, 26-27, going into the final quarter. Unfortunately, the Tornadoes would come up short and lost the game, 33-34. Scoring for Eureka were Dehlinger 11, Palmer 9, Evenson 6, Ashlock 5 and Crisswell 2.
Eureka’s B-team girls claimed the only victory of the evening, claiming an 11-4 lead in the first and winning the two-quarter game 15-7. Scoring for Eureka were Evenson 7 and Cox and Crisswell each with 4.
In the boys A-team action, the Tornadoes trailed 2-6 after the first and 7-13 at halftime. Although Eureka doubled their points in the third, they still trailed 14-22 going into the final stanza. Eureka lost the game 22-33. Scoring for Eureka were Adkins 13, Neill 4, Gavin Gonzalez 3 and Liam Mead 2.
Eureka’s B-team boys were down 0-4 after the first but outscored the Yellowjackets 7-5 in the second to close the gap to 7-9 at halftime. Fredonia pulled away in the third, with Eureka trailing 11-16 going into the final quarter. Eureka lost the game 1828. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Marcus Pearce 7, Bryson Gilbert 4, Brannon Blakely 3 and Noonan and Wells each with 2.
