Toronto News

Wasn’t the rain the other day wonderful? I don’t know how much we got because we brought the rain gauge in, but it’s better than what family got in the Panhandle of Oklahoma. They got over 4” of snow. I know it’s winter, I’m just not ready for the white stuff.

Where did the name for “French Fries” come from?

It’s getting to where you can really see the progress on Cedar Creek Bridge. Just a quick glance to the east and you can see how far they have come. They will have to put the pavement back, of course, after they get the bridge all done. I think, by summertime, the construction work will be but a memory.

Hello! to all in area nursing and assisted living facilities; Hello, also, to all in area hospitals and rehab centers.

We offer our sympathy to the families and friends of Harold Rife. We offer our sympathy to all others who lost loved ones this past week. May they rest in peace.

The Toronto Library has lots of exciting things planned for this month. They also have a monthly newsletter that goes out via email. If you would like to be added to the list contact the Toronto Library at [email protected] or call 620-637-2661.

The Toronto Booster Club is still raising funds for the new Playground Project. So far they have raised $15,000, gotten grants for $15,000, have received $5,710 in donations, and are applying for more grants.

Anyone who would like to make a donation are welcome to and if you donate $500 or more, a metal plaque with your name, a business name, or in memory of someone will be placed on site to recognize your generosity towards our wonderful community.

If you’d like to donate, you can use PayPal - torontoboosterclub@ gmail.com mail a check to PO Box 1, Toronto, KS 66777, or message them at torontoboosterclub@ gmail.com for cash options.

This playground will be a nice addition to our community. It is more centrally located and will be used by many people, locals and visitors to town alike. For many years the old playground at the school had more visitors than the old city park located on south Stockton.

I for one can’t wait to see the finished project. I only hope it does not have a ground up tire base like at Toronto Point. While it is nice and soft it gets extremely hot in the summer when the sun is beating down. I have been there when it was so hot you could smell the rubber base.

Answer: It’s not what you probably think: French fries likely originated in Belgium, where fried potatoes have been popular since the 1600s. American soldiers in World War I tasted them there and called them “French” because French was the local language. Quote: “Everyone thinks they have the best dog. And none of them are wrong.” - W.R.
