Hughes, Owings Claimed Top Honors At Burlington; Baumgartel and Scott Also Claimed Hardware

The Eureka Tornado high school wrestling teams traveled to Burlington on Saturday, Jan. 10, with senior Harlie Owings and junior Mason Hughes each claiming first place honors in their weigh divisions. Lady Tornado freshman Emma Baumgartel placed 2nd and freshman Tate Scott placed 3rd. Eureka sophomore Killian Harrington placed 5th, and junior Maela Neill finished the day in 6th place.

Following are the results for Eureka wrestlers:

34th Annual Burlington Invitational 120: Maddox Hughes (711) received a bye; he lost by fall to Bryce Cormier (Silver Lake) 12-3 (Fall 2:47); won by fall over Joshua Cumpton (Cherryvale) 1-11 (Fall 1:34); and lost a 3-6 decision to Cooper Bradley (Baldwin) 12-6.

126: Mason Hughes (15-6) placed 1st. He won by fall over Josiah Meyer (Richmond-Central Heights) 3-6 (Fall 0:50); won by fall over Wyatt Whitten (Eskridge-Mission Valley) 6-8 (Fall 0:41); won by fall over Jacob Magnall (McPherson) 7-6 (Fall 1:16); and won a 24-14 major decision over Gable Steadham (Baldwin) 9-2. 132: Tate Scott (16-5) placed 3rd. He won by fall over Noah Estrada (Howard-West Elk) 0-8 (Fall 0:58); lost by fall to Carson Moore (Wellsville) 3-1 (Fall 2:13); won by fall over Harlin Bagley (Independence) 5-7 (Fall 1:55); won by fall over Hayes Cobb (Cherryvale) 13-6 (Fall 1:27); won by fall over Jaxon Waterer (Silver Lake) 11-4 (Fall 4:37); and won by fall over Francisco Felhabar (Kansas City-Turner) 4-7 (Fall 0:51).

150: Fisher Hobbs (710) lost by fall to Noah Henderson (Caney Valley) 13-5 (Fall 0:33); received a bye; and lost by fall to Jake Martin (Wellsville) 11-5 (Fall 0:48).

157: Aiden Osborne (613) lost by fall to Broc Ivy (Humboldt) 9-4 (Fall 1:29); received a bye; and lost a 0-16 tech fall to Noah Howard (Fredonia) 14-5.

285: Killian Harrington (9-7) placed 5th. He won by fall over Edward Metcalf (Howard-West Elk) 11-11 (Fall 0:29); won a 14-8 decision over Isaiah Cazee (St. George-Rock Creek HS) 13-6; lost by fall to Camden Jackson (Osage City/Lebo) 16-1 (Fall 1:09); lost by fall to Carter Leathers (McPherson) 13-4 (Fall 1:27); and won a 7-4 decision in sudden victory - 1 over Isaiah Cazee (St. George-Rock Creek) 13-6.

9th Burlington LadyCat Invitational 110: Emma Baumgartel (12-7) placed 2nd. She won by fall over Addy Hutchinson (Wellsville) 2-9 (Fall 1:47); won by fall over Ebony Hughes (Richmond- Central Heights) 11-3 (Fall 3:43); and lost by fall to Kenna Miles (Fort Scott) 13-1 (Fall 2:31).

125: Maela Neill (13-8) placed 6th. She won by fall over Reagan Whisenhunt (Uniontown) 7-8 (Fall 4:00); lost by fall to Chloe Mund (Coffeyville-Field Kindley) 11-1 (Fall 1:42); won by fall over Ivy Holloman (Baldwin) 13-7 (Fall 1:51); won by fall over Amara Dossett (McPherson) 14-8 (Fall 2:24); lost by fall to Ali Wilcoxson (St. George-Rock Creek) 13-6 (Fall 1:28); and lost by fall to Bryleigh Rigdon (Caney Valley) 13-3 (Fall 2:02).

170: Harlie Owings (151) placed 1st. She won by fall over Autumn Fraser (Richmond-Central Heights) 4-7 (Fall 0:18); won by fall over Haylee Knight (Howard-West Elk) 5-6 (Fall 1:03); won by fall over Paige Ferrara (Burlington) 20-3 (Fall 3:55); and won by fall over ElliAnna Lisher (Baldwin) 15-6 (Fall 0:45).

The Lady Tornadoes will compete at the Newton Tournament this Wednesday- Thursday, Jan. 14-15. Both boys and girls teams will then compete at the Bluestem Jamboree on Jan. 20. Eureka will host their annual junior varsity mixer on Friday, Jan. 23 at 4:30 p.m. and their annual Eureka Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 9:30 a.m.
