The Eureka Tornadoes junior high basketball teams were back on the court last Thursday, Jan. 8, as they faced the Cubs of Humboldt. Eureka struggled against the Cubs, going 1-4 for the night.
In Lady Tornado action, Eureka’s A team claimed an early 7-5 lead in the first and held on at halftime as both teams scored 4 in the second quarter. The Tornadoes led at halftime 119. Eureka struggled in the second half, only adding 8 points in the next two quarters and lost the game 19-24. Scoring for the Lady Tornadoes were Bella Damron 6, Molly Dehlinger 5 and Kaylee Palmer, Alivia Hare, Raegen Ashlock and Khloe Crisswell all with 2.
Eureka’s B-team ladies claimed the sole win for the Tornadoes. They claimed a 10-8 win in a two-quarter match up. Scoring for Eureka were Braxtyn Evenson 4 and Mia Ptacek, Bronwyn Hall and Crisswell all with 2.
Although the Tornado boys struggled against Humboldt, Head Coach Gio Garcia shared “I’m proud of their growth and their ability to leave it all on the court. We saw more improvement today and we will continue to improve each game.”
Eureka’s A-team boys pushed the Cubs only trailing by two after the first, 11-13, and by five at half, 14-19. The Tornadoes edged closer in the third trailing by three, 22-25, going into the final stanza. The Cubs pulled away in the final quarter and Eureka fell, 33-43. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Felix Neill 12, Cord Adkins 11, Gavin Gonzalez 6 and Henry Lindamood and Donovan Owings each with 2.
The Tornado boys’ B-team struggled in the first half, only scoring one basket in the first half. Eureka trailed 2-13 at halftime and were unable to make up the difference in the second half. However, the Tornadoes recorded 15 points in the second half, falling to the Cubs, 17-31. Scoring for Eureka were Jessn Ogden 8, Landon Noonan 4, Asher Euler 3 and Bryson Gilbert 2.
Eureka’s C-team boys trailed 0-5 after the first but closed the gap to 6-8 in the second. The Tornadoes were unable to come out strong in the third and were outscored 0-8 and trailed 6-16 going into the final quarter. They played their best quarter of the game to close out the game, 17-23. Scoring for Eureka were Euler 10, Marcus Pearce 3 and Blake Wells 4.
