The Eureka Fire Department (EFD) responded to a reported exterior structure fire at 600 N. Sycamore, in Eureka, at 7:54 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025. While en route, firefighters were advised that several propane tanks from a barbecue grill were burning and venting flames toward the structure.
Upon arrival, EFD crews quickly extinguished the exterior fire and secured the propane tanks, preventing further escalation. Despite the rapid response, the fire had extended into the attic, requiring a prolonged firefighting effort. Crews battled the attic fire for several hours and faced accessibility challenges due to the fire’s location.
Assisting agencies included Greenwood County Fire Department: Central, Reece, and Hamilton Divisions, along with the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office and Greenwood County EMS.
Fire officials reported major damage to the attic area, while the primary living space sustained water damage only. The cause of the fire was determined to be an unattended barbecue grill. No injuries were reported.
EFD cleared the scene at 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 28, 2025.
The home is owned by Rick and Renee Wade.
